POULTRY SUPER-FOOD: Algae Spirulina

POULTRY SUPER-FOOD: Algae Spirulina

Also known as Arthrospira platensis, it is an algae that lives in salt lakes with alkaline waters. Spirulina has multiple nutritional properties related to its content in:

– protein with high biological value and high in essential amino acids

– chlorophyll

– omega 3 & omega 6 essential fatty acids

– carotenoids with antioxidant action

– high iron content

– Vitamins A, D, C, K, B6

Spirulina activates cellular antioxidant enzymes, inhibits lipid peroxidation and DNA damage, scavenges free radicals, and increases the activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase.

Spirulina can stimulate the production of antibodies and up- or downregulate the expression of cytokine-encoding genes to induce immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory responses.

Daily diet integration with Spirulina in poultry intensive farming can help to maintain a natural immune response and a strong antioxidant defence druing peak production period.
